2010 VHSA/EMO Insurance Agency Medal Finals Rule Changes
At the VHSA Medal Finals, two disobediences by a horse or pony will eliminate the finalist (previously three disobediences). The three disobediences will remain at all qualifying classes.

The VHSA/EMO Insurance Agency Pony Medal Finals
The 2010 VHSA/EMO Insurance Agency Pony Medal Finals were held at the Loudoun Benefit Horse Show on Sunday, June 20th and we would like to congratulate the following winners of the 2010 VHSA/EMO Pony Medal Finals:

The VHSA would like to extend our appreciation to the Loudoun Benefit Horse Show and Mr. Gary Baker for hosting the 2010 VHSA Pony Medal Finals. Also a special thank you to Ms. Lori Fellows for making the Pony Finals extra special for all of our exhibitors. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the EMO Insurance Agency for their generous sponsorship of the VHSA Pony Medal Class throughout the year as well as the Pony Medal Finals.

The VHSA/EMO Insurance Agency Adult Medal, Hunter Seat Medal, Children's Medal Finals and Equitation on the Flat will be held at the Lexington National Horse Show in August.   The Schedule and Qualifying Points necessary for the VHSA/EMO Medals are:

Friday, August 13th, 6:30 p.m.: VHSA Children's Medal Finals - Two Blues or 100 Points
Saturday, August 14th, 6:30 p.m.: VHSA Championship on the Flat Competition - Two Blues or 40 Points
Saturday, August 14th, 7:00 p.m.: VHSA Hunter Seat Medal Finals - Two Blues or 40 Points
Sunday, August 15th, 8:00 a.m.: VHSA Adult Medal Finals - Two Blues or 70 Points

VHSA Junior Horsemanship Championship Competition is a three phase competition which is designed to reward young riders who best show their expertise in a combination of equine knowledge, riding ability, thorough understanding of their horse's needs and how to take care of them properly. This competition is open to Junior Members who have qualified for the VHSA Hunter Seat Medal Finals. The three phases of this competition are:

     Thursday, August 12th, 7:00 p.m.:   Written Test for the Junior Horsemanship Championship Competition (10%)
     Saturday evening, August 14th:       First Round of the VHSA Hunter Seat Medal (50%)
     Friday and Saturday:                         Practicum (40%) Practicum Judge is Ms. Andrea Wells

In order to be qualified for the VHSA Medal Finals and the Championship on the Flat a VHSA member must have either two Blues (automatically qualifies) or a set minimum of points. The number of points will be determined by the Equitation Committee and announced shortly.

Karen Healey Mounted Clinic
The Virginia Horse Shows Association’s Special Events Committee is very pleased to announce there will be a Karen Healey Hunter and Hunter Seat Equitation Mounted Clinic. This is a great opportunity for riders to enhance their performance at the VHSA Medal Finals which will be held at the Lexington National Horse Show later in the week.

Ms. Karen Healey, based in Westlake Village, California, was named the 2007 Hunter/Equitation Horseman of the Year by The Chronicle of the Horse. Her winning system has led clients to great successes in the show ring time and time again. Karen’s clients have earned top honors in the hunter divisions, all the major equitation finals, and many have gone on to be successful Grand Prix riders. She works with riders of all levels and has a wide cross section of students. Even though she is known for her hard work and determination - she is always up early working with students at shows and the last to leave at the end of the day – it is her love of teaching and dedication to excellence at all levels that inspires her. Karen’s greatest joy is watching students develop to their greatest potential.

Karen was mentored by George Morris and worked for him at his Hunterdon Farms from 1971-1974. She moved to California in 1981 and began her business at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. In the following years, she developed such riders as Mia Wood, Lauren Kay, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, Kristen Posehn, 1998 AHSA Jr. Horsemen of the Year Jill Prieto, Kasey Ament as well as 2008 USET Talent Search and Style Award Winner Hannah Selleck to name a few.

Currently there will be three two hour sessions - two at 3'0" (which are full) and one at 3'6". The Sessions run from 9:00 a.m. ~ 4:00 p.m.
